5 Aesop's fables

Stone Sandwiches

Grade: 4
School: Morrison Academy,
Bethany Campus, Taipei
Teacher: Sandra Chow

This piece is a contribution from a teacher who was a pioneer in our study of multiliteracies pedagogies. After a several years of participating at Joyce Public School, Sandra moved to Taiwan, where she linked to the project from her new educational institution via Skypechats and Skypecasts. There are substantial differences in educational context: Morrison Academy is an international school in Taipei that has a Christian mission. The school follows an American curriculum. The children, like those at Joyce, are culturally and linguistically diverse, though they share religious values and observance, and as private school students in an international academy, are not economically deprived. Sandra’s interest is in ethical education and she uses a variant of a traditional Asian art form: Indonesian shadow puppetry, or Wayang Kulit, as a genre enabling children to perform their rewritten versions of traditional Aesop’s fables.
