The Blind Man & The Elephant

Grade: 4
School: Joyce Public School, Toronto
Teacher: Sandra Chow
Sandra Chow’s interest in fables and folk tales as powerful narrative learning devices is at the heart of this wonderful movie project to retell The blind man and the elephant. This traditional story teaches that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, the whole being rather a different beast than the sum of its differently perceived parts. The inspired rewrite that the children present here, complete with hand drawn pictures, shared narration, and sound effects of considerable energy exemplify multimodal learning at its best. The old lady and the cheetah showcases the children’s sense of ownership of their production, their intrinsic understanding of the story’s moral, and their evident enjoyment.
